The 72 melakarta ragas

Each cell shows the number, the name, and the four notes that change between ragas (Ri, Ga, Dha, Ni). Sa and Pa never change, and Ma is the same across a whole half. The left half uses the lower Ma (M1); the right half uses the higher Ma (M2). Each chakra is a group of six. How the chart is built is explained in Parent and derived ragas.

29. Dheerasankarabharanam

  • Number 29 is in the Bana chakra (chakra 5 of 12). The chakra fixes R2 and G3.
  • It is raga 5 of 6 inside its chakra. That position fixes D2 and N3.
  • Numbers 1 to 36 use the lower Ma and 37 to 72 the higher Ma, so this raga uses M1. Sa and Pa never change.

Computed tones, evenly spaced. Real singing uses gamakas and may tune notes slightly differently.
