Ragas and feelings
Carnatic tradition connects ragas with emotional flavours called rasas . A raga may be described as peaceful, joyful, heroic, tender, or full of longing. A performer brings the feeling out through expression, or Bhava .
Time of day and season
Traditional texts also link some ragas with times of day or seasons: a raga may be said to belong to the morning, the evening or the rainy season. This idea exists in Indian music generally.
In today’s Carnatic practice, these rules are not strictly followed in concerts: a concert may be given at any time, and ragas are chosen for many other reasons. Where the site mentions a time or season, it will say it is traditional, and only when it is well attested.
What to make of it
- Use the associations as a memory aid and a clue to how musicians think about ragas, not as a way to decide what a raga “is”.
- Do not expect to hear exactly the emotion described, particularly in a short piece, because the words of a song and the way it is performed also shape the feeling.
- Expect disagreement: where two sources describe a raga’s mood differently, that is normal and the site will say so.
You have finished the raga basics
You now have the tools to read a raga’s page: its notes, its shape, its ornaments and key phrases, its place in the family tree, and its traditional associations. The later modules apply this to individual ragas, one by one.
