Module 4: Raga fundamentals · Lesson 1
What is a raga?

A raga is more than a scale
Beginners often hear that a Raga is “a scale”. That is a good first approximation, but it misses most of what a raga is. A raga is a melodic framework: a bundle of rules and habits that together make a recognisable melodic personality. A raga usually includes:
- the notes it uses (and which variant of each);
- the path the notes take going up and coming down;
- which notes are stressed and which are only touched in passing;
- the ornaments applied to particular notes (gamakas );
- characteristic phrases that identify it (prayogas ).
Together these are called the raga’s lakshana , the description of its defining features.
Why the same notes can give different ragas
Two ragas can use exactly the same set of notes and still be different ragas, because they move differently: one may glide into a note from below, another may jump to it; one may linger on the third note, another may only brush past it. The notes are the vocabulary, and the raga is how they are used.
A helpful picture is a spoken language. The same letters can make different words, and the same words can be arranged to say different things. A raga is closer to the grammar and accent of a language than to its alphabet.
What a raga is not
- Not a song. A song (a composition) is in a raga, and many different songs can be in the same raga. A raga is the world a song lives in.
- Not fixed to a single pitch. Because the home note Sa can be set anywhere, a raga is defined by relationships between notes, not by absolute pitches.
- Not only a mood. Ragas are traditionally linked to moods, but that is a separate matter (see the last lesson of this module).
Where ragas are used
Ragas are used in both composed and improvised music. A composed piece gives you a fixed tune in a raga, and in an improvised passage such as an Alapana the performer builds the raga from nothing, note by note, to show what it is. Recognising a raga by ear is the skill that this module aims to explain.
