What it is

A guide to the tanpura written from the Hindustani side: four strings, the first usually tuned to Pa but sometimes to Ma or Ni, the middle pair to Sa, the last to the lower Sa, and its role as a backdrop for the performer.

Why it is useful here

An independent description of the drone tuning, to compare with Wikipedia; it is Hindustani practice, so the Carnatic tuning is read from the NIOS book.
