About

A bowed string instrument from the West that became central to Carnatic music. It is played seated on the floor, with the scroll resting near the ankle, and tuned relative to the performer's Sa. In a vocal concert the violinist follows and echoes the singer's phrases. Baluswami Dikshitar is credited with pioneering its use in Carnatic music, and Vadivelu of the Tanjore Quartet is also associated with it.
