Also: Carnatic flute, Bamboo flute

Confidence: medium Last verified:

A melodic instrument used for solos and as accompaniment.

About

The bamboo flute used in Carnatic music. One teaching page describes it as a side-blown (transverse) flute with six or seven finger holes, while a flute maker describes an eight-hole flute, so the details of its build differ by source. Its ornaments (gamakas) are made with fingers and breath. Details on its history are limited in the sources checked so far.
