About
A plucked string instrument about four feet long with a large hollow body (usually jackfruit wood), a neck with 24 metal frets, four playing strings and three drone strings. The player sits cross-legged. The present form with fixed frets is said to date from the time of Raghunatha Nayak, a 17th-century king in Tamil Nadu. In tradition the veena is associated with the goddess Saraswati.
