Biography
Born Varadayya in the village of Movva in Krishna district, present-day Andhra Pradesh, he took the name Kshetrayya (roughly, one who travels), said to be because he sang at temples as he travelled. His songs are signed with the mudra Muvva Gopala, a reference to his birthplace and to Krishna. Accounts of his life are legendary in part: one blog records two different stories, and a 2019 journal article argues that Kshetrayya was a literary persona shaped over centuries rather than a documented historical person.
Notable contributions
The best known composer of padams, slow expressive songs on romantic love addressed to Krishna as Muvva Gopala. His padams remain central to Bharatanatyam and are also sung in concerts. Sources credit him with about four thousand compositions, and Wikipedia says only a handful survive.
